A Different Sort of Language in 10,000 Hours
10,000 hours equates to about 1.14 years. In this time, like a few people on the blog, I would like to learn a language. Unlike people on this blog, the language I would like to learn is not Finnish or Arabic. The language I would like to learn is more along the lines of C++ or JavaScript. I would use those hours to teach myself a programming language. Instead of using this language to communicate better with my family, learn more about my heritage, or use it to get a job, I would use the language to create programs, apps, websites, or games. I have always been interested in computers and games and would like to create something of my own. I would love to be able to create my own video game. Hopefully, that would lead to me making a living creating video games or apps. In our increasingly computer-dependent world, having the skills to create websites or apps are very helpful to succeed. It propelled Mark Zuckerberg into fame. It helped make Valve millions of dollars. It helped make Angry Birds a household name (Do I have to link that?). Even if I don't create the next Half-Life, Facebook, or Angry Birds, just knowing that I could help entertain a few people would be enough to justify all the effort.

I get exactly where you're going Chris, I would also like to be able to learn and understand the language of networking and both computer hardware and software. I think that since the world is so big on technology now, that people should learn to understand programming. Even if its a simple class that's taught like an elective at an elementary school so kids can grow up with a knowledge of programming, it'll still be a great way to expand ones knowledge and capacity of the growing technological world.
ReplyDeleteAs Nick mentioned the world today revolves around technology. You could make a career out of computer programming and you could help many others who are not as technologically advanced. As you said you may not design the next Facebook but with the changing technology you could definitely entertain some people and achieve your computer programming goal.
ReplyDeleteChris, I think it's a great idea to get into the technology industry. Not only would it be interesting and challenging work, but you would probably have pretty good job security as the field is growing and changing so quickly. Also, I think it's great that you want to get into it so you can entertain others and not just get the job because it pays well.
