10,000 Hours of ASL

If I could practice anything for 10,000 hours it would be American Sign Language. Ever since I was little I have admired the language and the ability to communicate using only your hands. My hope for the future is to have a career in ASL interpretation. Those 10,000 hours of focused practice would be my chance to improve upon the basic American Sign Language knowledge I have now and to help me achieve my career goals.

  1. Kim, American Sign Language is such an interesting language to learn. It seems to be very complex and difficult to remember though. I was just wondering where you were introduced to ASL, and what interests you the most about it?

    1. I was first introduced to ASL in school when we would learn the alphabet. I really took interest in the language however when I took a summer course over the vacation between eighth and ninth grade. I am probably most interested by the uniqueness of the language and the ability to communicate using only your hands as well as the culture and the deaf community as a whole. I have often wondered what the right words to use in a situation are and ASL is a very direct language and I find that very interesting.

  2. Kim, I think that taking 10, 000 hours of ASL is a great commitment and also a challenging one. I agree with Alanna that its a very complex language, but it is also a huge act of kindness by supporting the blind and the deaf. I also appreciate how you have decided to dedicate this practice as a career as well.
